Love. It's a negotiation, and the stakes are high. Fresh out of the gate, it's exciting, it's risky, and it can run away from you if you are not especially careful. It can throw you, if it's not right. Love can kick you! And if it's gonna kick you, you can be sure it will try and kick you while you are down! Love puts side blinders on our hearts, and we tend to focus on no one other than the one we are pursuing. We ride their heels or they ours, nothing touching save for the particles of passion fruit-colored clouds of magical dust surrounding hooves that have seen a multitude of farriers in search of a most perfect-fitting shoe. We take turns gaining and losing on other contenders as the furlongs are completed, perfect and mechanical-looking for the untrained eye of the fascinated spectator, who is merely a nobody overseeing it all and making picks about who he will think will actually make it. A case of stop-and-go traffic, only you never really ever do just stop. Instead, you just speed up and slow down, speed up and slow down as is required when sometimes we happen upon hurdles or doubt. Some of us are not, but so many of us are looking for that photo finish. We want to win with somebody else winning right along with us, and feel very lucky when we get to share in the goodness of truths, sweet triumphs, and victories, a trifecta all its own.
